What health information professionals are saying about the new program...
“The courses are easy to follow. I like the on-demand style of learning so that I can fit it into my schedule. I would definitely recommend this to my fellow health information colleagues who want to stay abreast of the need for health literacy today.” - Debi Primeau, MA, RHIA, FAHIMA
For those currently working in the provider sector, especially at a FQHC where many fall into the underserved category, it is helpful knowledge to have --particularly the 'plain language part.' I am currently teaching at three different universities, and this is useful knowledge to have." - Elizabeth St. James, DHA, MBA, MPA, CCEP, CHPS, RHIT
“Understanding and applying health literacy principles is a natural complement to health information professionals’ roles in the health system. More education on these topics will positively impact patients through improved system design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination.” - Lakesha Kinnerson, MPH, RHIA
All proceeds from AHIMA members and supporters who enroll in the IHA health literacy courses support AHIMA Foundation programs, research, and projects.

Maternal Health Literacy for Nutrition Care Equity
AHIMA Foundation, Mother of Fact & Claris Health Research Proposal Advances to Next Phase in NIH Funding Challenge
Mother of Fact is a HIPAA-secure tech platform with on-demand messaging, telehealth services from registered dietitians, and tailored nutrition monitoring from pregnancy to baby’s first year. Claris Health is a 501(c)(3) outpatient medical care clinic in Los Angeles, CA that provides prenatal education, counseling, and ongoing support to Medicaid-covered families.
Stay tuned for future updates on this exciting new project to provide point-of-diagnosis access to RDN-telehealth and app-based nutrition literacy for pregnant people on Medicaid with gestational diabetes.
Illiteracy in the United States, at that time, was much more prevalent than the US Census figures indicated, as they were simply based on the ability to write one's name. The army test, however, measured whether the soldier could get anything out of a newspaper or write a letter home. With that standard, it found 28% of the men drafted into WWI were illiterate - which we know now contributes to one's ability to access, understand, and use health information. (This also may explain the number of draftees who were too unwell for service at the time). #HealthLiteracyMonth
